Summary of the chapter 5 of San Francisco
I wrote about this book last week. I will tell you about the chapter 5 of the book.
Travel in San Francisco is very exciting. Many people come to the city every year. There are many hills across the city. Some of these are very steep. So, the most famous road on a steep hill in San Francisco is Lombard Street. It is a long road on Russian Hill. In 1922, people made the road go from side to side down the hill. This is easier for drives, but they need to drive from one side to the other side to the other eight times. San Francisco is also different from any big American cities. It does not have any big roads, so more people go by bus or walk.
A walk in the city is always good. There are wonderful views and nice buildings. For example, in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood there are the beautiful old house. They are in different colours.
Some people travel to and from the city by sea too. Workers come across the water every day, When they arrive they travel around on the ‘Muni’. It is all the bus and streetcar lines in San Francisco and the famous old cable car lines too.
They first began in 1873. Andrew Hallidie had the idea for then when he saw a bad road accident. They were a very good answer and soon there were cable car lines across the city.
But, San Francisco lost many of its cable cars in the 1906 earthquake.
After this, a lot of people used bus to travel around the city. In 1947 some
most important men wanted to close the cable car lines. The people of San
Francisco became angry because they did not want to lose them.
In the end, they saved the cable cars and today forty of the cars move around the city. Drivers and conductors take the money and help people when they travel too. This is important because some travelers stand out of the cable cars on the side.
One of the most famous conductors was Maya Angelou. When she was only
fourteen, she became the first American streetcar conductor in the city. She
later became one of the most important writers in the United States. He book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is
about her early years and the lives of African-American in the 1930s.
Nice work
